Beach
Black Point Beach is the southernmost of the six public coastal access trails that Sonoma County Regional Parks maintains through The Sea Ranch, the gated community strung along Highway 1 just south of Gualala. The quarter-mile Black Point Trail crosses open bluff-top meadow before a steep wooden staircase drops to the sand — a curving beach that runs about a quarter mile along the base of the sea cliffs and is the longest of the Sea Ranch access beaches.
The beach sits just north of Black Point itself, a rocky cape that juts roughly 250 yards out from the shoreline. It's a working stretch of coast — surfers know it, and the access points double as launch spots for diving, fishing, and wildlife watching. The setting is classic Sonoma coast: windswept bluffs, crashing surf directly below, and almost no shelter from the elements.
The walk out is short and straightforward — 0.25 miles one way across open, well-maintained bluff-top path with ocean views the whole way. The effort is all at the end: a steep wooden staircase down the cliff to the beach, which you'll climb back up on the return. It's manageable for most, but the stairs are the reality check, not the trail itself.
The bluff is fully exposed — little to no shade and a constant sea breeze — so it can feel raw on a gray day and hot on a still one. Down on the sand you get a proper coastal vista with waves breaking below the cliffs. Keep dogs and kids close: these are real cliff edges, and the surf here is powerful.
