Park
Bower Park is Gualala's community park — a wooded Mendocino County recreation ground on Old Stage Road, about two miles northeast of town and just north of the Mendocino–Sonoma county line (roughly across from the Ocean Ridge/Gualala airport). It sits on gently sloping ground under pine and evergreens, with a small grove of redwoods and a central duck pond that was originally dug as a holding pond for a never-built golf course.
It's a locals' park more than a scenic-coast destination: a place for a picnic, a playground afternoon, a pickup game, or a quiet loop under the trees. Note: the park is undergoing a multi-year county renovation (funded by a California State Parks grant), so some facilities may be closed or under construction — Google currently lists the park as temporarily closed. Check current status before making a special trip.
The park packs a lot into a small footprint:
- Duck pond at the center — good for wildlife watching and catch-and-release fishing (a California fishing license is required)
- Two playgrounds for kids
- Sports courts: tennis and basketball courts, plus a softball/baseball diamond (maintained by the South Coast Little League) and, per one guide, a disc golf course
- Nature trail / fitness course and walking paths through the trees
- Shaded picnic areas for lunch or a relaxed afternoon
It's flat and easy — suited to families and casual visitors rather than serious hikers. The setting is peaceful and green, a nice change of pace from the coast a couple miles away.
