Four-Eyed Frog Books opened in September 2003 as Joel Crockett's dream of "a little store — in a small town — on the ocean." After his wife's death in 2012 nearly forced a sale, 24 community members stepped in with donations of $1,000–$15,000 and no expectation of return; by 2016 the store was formally owned by 25 local shareholders, Crockett included, making it one of the few American bookstores owned outright by its own customers.
That community-first character is everywhere: more than 240 frog figurines gifted by regulars decorate the shelves, a redwood height chart by the register has tracked visiting kids for nearly 20 years, and the shop is one of only three bookstores worldwide to display a diorama by children's-book author Maggie Rudy.
